Kaleto Fortress

The quiet Rhodope peaks once guarded a lively ancient world. One of them, Kaleto near Ardino, sheltered a Thracian fortress whose traces have largely disappeared.

Its outer defences begin at the westernmost part of the site. The fortress has an irregular circular plan about 67 m across; scattered broken stones belong to its outer wall.

A nature trail leads to the summit and a fine view over Ardino, nestled between hills descending towards the Ardinska River. Between the Eastern and Western Rhodopes, the town offers clean air, peace and natural beauty in every season, while preserving much of the region's culture and history.
